At Preston Primary School, we pride ourselves on a whole school approach to promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils which will help to form their characters. Our values and ethos are lived in the daily lives of all members of our school community. We are passionate about promoting the health and wellbeing of all pupils within school, as we know that this has the potential to improve their educational outcomes, along with preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. We endeavour to empower the children at our school with the knowledge, experiences, skills and attitudes that will lead them to make good moral choices and help them to make a success of their own lives and make positive contributions to the lives of those around them. Kindness and ‘caring hearts’ are central to all we do.
Personal development is about learning to make healthy and well thought out choices, leading to positive behaviour which guides how life is lived. It focuses on personal and societal values, and acknowledging and understanding disagreements and different points of view. Discussions in class and assemblies, explore the consequences of decisions and understanding other people’s needs and opinions.
Personal development at Preston Primary enables pupils to build a framework of moral values, which regulates their personal behaviour and helps them to work together effectively. Essential to this is developing the skills for successful and healthy personal relationships.
Cultural development is about understanding and feeling comfortable in a variety of cultures and situations. We create opportunities for pupils to experience art, theatre and travel. Valuing cultural diversity and challenging racism is important. Our curriculum helps pupils to know about and understand their own culture, background and history and also to learn all about different lifestyles, backgrounds and beliefs, broadening horizons and opening doors into other worlds. Our curriculum and the experiences we offer our pupils help them to become active participants in society with the knowledge and experience of the ways that the world works so they are able to to operate successfully within that world.
