Our Curriculum

Our Curriculum

At the heart of Preston Primary School, is a carefully planned, progressive curriculum that is rich in knowledge and inspired by high-quality literature, opening doors into other worlds, stimulating curiosity and promoting a love of learning.

We believe… Learning should be an adventure that engages and motivates children with a desire to learn and achieve, inspiring them to become the best that they can be.

Excellent provision for personal, social and emotional development must underpin the academic curriculum in order to support the development of ‘the whole child’ and promote good mental and physical health that is the foundation for success and well-being in life.

Learning happens when children are challenged to change the way they think, to learn and remember new knowledge, vocabulary and ideas, to develop their skills and to work collaboratively with others.

Learning is most effective when what children learn (the curriculum intent), how they learn it (the implementation) and how the learning is assessed (the impact) are all carefully thought through, planned and integrated.

Learning is maximised when there is a clear progression through each curriculum area and connections are made between learning across different curriculum areas and over time.

Curriculum Content and Organisation

Building upon the objectives of the National Curriculum, with the East Riding RE syllabus and the Jigsaw PSHE programme, our curriculum fully equips the children with a breadth of knowledge, skills and experience which enables them to leave primary education as well-rounded, confident individuals prepared for the modern world.

Our curriculum is organised thematically with the starting point for each year group ‘s study being high-quality children’s literature. These stories and poems open doors into other cultures, other worlds, other times and places and stimulate study across the curriculum. Some themes and topics are revisited in increasingly deeper ways, allowing children to build on their knowledge and understanding.

Further detail relating to what your child will learn in each class can be found in our termly Curriculum Overviews.
